Semester Two - Ranking Project - Visual Communication

Week 1 Research

The Brief:

Re-design a book cover from a given list of books.

Create one slide for each of the following headings on either Prezi or Powerpoint;-

Title & Author.  Synopsise the novel to 150 words, down to 3 or less.  Outline the main characters.  Contextualise the Time-line, Theme, Mood tone & Colour.  Explore the elements of Typography.  Research 2 book covers you are interested in – looking at layout, concept and typography.

Week 2 Ranking Project

Print Elective - journal

Print Elective 2 weeks

The brief for print was "the space around us", I decided not to be too literal with this project and to  concentrate on my own space invaders, my thoughts - past present and future.  The subject matter being a platform in which to experiment with the processes of monoprinting and dry point etching.

Some of the prints were sucessful, others not.  For the most part I enjoyed the 2 week stint in print after I got over 40 odd students scrambling for space rollers etc - it certainly was hectic!

When I first went to visit the college the hallway down to SU  brought back a childhood memory.  Even though this print is "un-finished" it came out ok.  (Drypoint)

This is a photo I took at Tarmonbarry Loch - I used this for subject matter in the rest of the prints,  isolating areas of the floats that I explored through colour.

At the time my daughter was part of Forgney NS St Pat's parade - the entry theme was "Reared for Emigration" - from ages 5 upwards, squished and un-neatly seated on a boat and plane waving their flags with suitcases in tow!  Are we really at that time again?  These thoughts were certainly to the fore...

Painting Elective 2 weeks

The group collected items that we created an installation with.  We then proceeded to make compositions based on these.   Once the composition was right begin painting.  Acryllics only, and NO BLACK..........!

Weekend project - Paint one of Vermeers and one of Lucian Freuds paintings, copying stroke, application and use of tone. With acrylic and NO Black. (And two days to do it)

Week one was enjoyable but the second week was pretty much a chore.

Vis Comm Elective - 2 weeks

Week 1

We were given a word and were asked to explore it through Typography.  Visually, the word should not need interpretaion but speak for itself.

My word:  Success

Continuing with the same word, express it visually.

We were asked to find something at home that represented our word - sorry it was joggled around a bit!

Artist Statement

I have been focusing on objects in the landscape that are affected by light.  The sharp detail and contrast that is a result of this light source renders the subject completely changed – creating a mood or tone which as a result creates something beautiful that would otherwise be dull.

Initially I captured images by photographing them, specifically, the new canvas covering to the Milk Market and the drainage area.  This gave me great contrasting images and shapes with dynamic perspective.  Isolating specific details resulted in these abstracted “objects” becoming something more than just form and function.
